Computer "lagging"
I have a strange issue where my computer will freeze for a few seconds and then resume normal activity
I call it lagging rather then freezing because it recovers but during the lag time typically very few things will work making it feel very much like my computer has frozen,
I can usually alt tab to something else that is running but will be unable to interact with most things
here's a screen shot taken during one such lag please note that it doesn't only happen when im running vlc but does happen most of all when I have some full screen application running.

This happens to me as well, only during WC3 though. I find that minimizing all other applications can help sometimes.

Is that machine running Vista perchance?

Random freezing is most likely going to be dodgy RAM, and as Nav pointed out, prefetch loads stuff into RAM.

Also could be dodgy hdd/filesystem your doing a fair amount of hdd reads when it froze.

I'd do a chkdsk which is quick and easy to check the file system, Vista auto-defrags so that should be ok.
Seatools for windows to check the physical hard drive.

swapping RAM is the easiest way to test that, if you have 2 sticks that you can run 1 at a time or another PC you can swap with, otherwise download the memtest bootable iso and run a few times.

That picture hosting service must be blocked here. I'd run Memtest like Chris said. Also is that Spybot's Teatimer running? Try disabling if it is?

Vista is so great that it already has a memory diagnostics tool. It is called... "Memory Diagnostics Tool". Run Mdsched.exe and it will ask you to restart to perform the test.

Microsofts built in programs tend to suck but w/e

^ Microsoft's built in diagnostic tools as well as the ones they offer for download are generally pretty good

They have always had a RAM checker available from http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp This was recent integrated into Windows Vista.
