The only thing that's noticably different (between Vista and Win7) is the two-fold increase in RAM required. The fact that Vista's requirements are considered too low in this area, could this be because Microsoft expects users to depend heavily upon virtualization software for compatibility within Windows 7?
That said, however, I've heard plenty of reports that the performance isn't bad at all on some systems with only 512MB RAM. In that case, it looks like Microsoft is overstating the requirements in order to compensate for other components where the architecture or other software contributes to performance losses (Low cache, cheap CPUs, slow disk drives, Zone Alarm, etc.).

Does anyone else have a problem with putting Win 7 into sleep mode? when i put it to sleep it just instantlt turns back on. I used to have a problem with Vista where it would randomly turn on at like 6-7AM. I am running Win 7 x64 RC1 now. Seems pretty great so far but i want to use it with a touchscreen really

Not a modem or network card causing it to wake up? I used to have a computer that would turn on whenever my phone rang till i found out there was a setting in device manager that would allow the modem to wake it up. Must have been something not quite right, coz the computer was actually off not just asleep.

My PC used to do that too, kinda creepy having your PC randomly startup in the early morning, disabled wake on LAN in BIOS

Also, I noticed that Sleep isn't an option on my Win 7 workstation, dunno why.

Seems to have fixed it thanks

Not something to do with having the wrong AHCI driver or whatever it is?

Well, I didn't need to install any drivers at all, so it probably has a generic one just to make it work but without features.

Btw, for those of you who don't have the RC yet and were waiting for Microsoft to release it for the public to try so you didn't have to waste your time and/or bandwidth downloading a torrent or mangaing a whole bunch of HTTP links, here it is:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows...nload.aspx

The download of the RC comes via Microsoft servers care of the Akamai download manager. Great speeds!

Just click the download link near the bottom of that page and sign in, and you should be able to get your keys and everything.

I recently added a 19" widescreen monitor to my Windows 7 PC, and was dissapointed to find I couldn't set my res to a widescreen 1440 x 900
I checked device manager and noticed that I had drivers for 'Standard VGA Adapter'
Doing a 'update driver' came back telling me that my driver was the best match, Its obviously a simple driver to just make it work with no advanced features.

Intel don't have any Win 7 drivers for their integrated chipsets, but I downloaded a Vista driver. The intel driver setup program tells me that my OS isn't supported, no surprises there.
Doing an 'update driver' again from device manager and pointing to the vista vga driver diretory, installs the driver, restarts my PC, and auto sets the res to 1440 x 900 for me.

And possibly related, I can now do sleep and hibernate

yay for Windows 7 Big Grin

But a note, even if it seems to have all the drivers you need included, you should still look for and install appropriate drivers. Until of course these drivers are made available via windows update like in Vista

IMO hardware drivers from M$ updates should never be used. I've seen it stuff things up a few times, and why not go to Asus or whatever manufacterer and get the right ones
