I have (well its my gfs) an inspiron 6400 with XP pro SP3 installed. Recently whenever i try to connect to my homes wireless network it just won't work. In the process of getting a DHCP assigned IP address the wireless card will sort of reset and the whole process starts over again, Then I wont get an IP address so that I cant go on the network. Over a period of about 5 mins trying it will auto assign itself the 169.1.1.1 address(not sure of the full address but the 1st 3 numbers are 169). The other day I updated the drivers and intel proset wireless software and to my surprise it worked. However it only worked for 3 days. Now its back to its old tricks and not working at all.
The card can detect wireless networks, and it can be disabled etc so there is nothing broken about it that I can find. Is it possible that it is just becoming faulty over time?
