Opera: Great, and easy to customize
A short while ago, I encountered a whinging n00b who complained to me that Opera had trouble downloading Warcraft III maps.

The problem occurs because there is no entry for Warcraft III map file types (extensions w3x, w3m). This is understandable, as Warcraft III is not exactly a widely used application where the file types are standardized. The problem is that Opera tends to think that a plugin is necessary for Opera to be able to view these files, and because such a thing doesn't exist, we get an error.

Here's a screenshot of what you would see:
Screenshot of the error 211KB, I thought the image slightly too large to include in the post.

Oh heavens! What to do!?

Well my friends, my usual answer would be to fix it yourself and stop crying/complaining, but given my generous mood at this very moment, and perhaps the ineptitude of my associates, I have opted to fix these things for you. :o

It's basically a matter of adding your own file type entry, and here's where Opera gets to be even more convenient than other, lesser browsers (IE, Firefox, Safari, all other browsers that aren't Opera).

Opera lists all the MIME types and associated file extensions in Downloads section under Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Downloads. See Below

Here is the File Type entry that I added for Warcraft III maps:

Note: The MIME type field is greyed-out because I'm viewing the File Type I have already added. The field should be editable when you add a new one

The entry above will allow Opera to automatically save Warcraft III maps to the appropriate folder under the Warcraft III install directory, so all I need to do is click on a link to the map, and then open up Warcraft III. The map should automatically be placed (unless it's within an archive).

You can do the exact same thing with any file type. As an example, torrent files are set to automatically open with utorrent when I click on a link to one.

That said, there are potential security risks involved with configuring Opera in this way, but I'm sure most of us are knowledgeable and experienced enough to avoid clicking on the wrong things

Or if you cant be bothered Right-Click > Save target file as

Yea thats much easier than having to go into settings and adding your own file types to be able to download the files you want....

I could teach my mum to right click and save as, but teaching her to do all that crap? No, just.... no

I hope this is a joke topic

If you had read the entire post, and if your brain were capable of beating a 286 at processing power, then you would have arrived at the more obvious, and just all-round correct conclusion that the post is explaining how a user can automate the downloading of various file types so that they don't ever need to use a workaround again.

I'm sure there's a lot of things that we all would like to teach your mum, but given that by genetic inheritance her brain size would seem comparable to yours, I don't think this article would suit her well.

Some people like to solve problems. Some people like to stitch wounds before they get infected and start to fester. The best and most pleasing solution is not always the easiest option to perform, especially where your mum is concerned.
It's no joke. It's people who can handle the complexities of simple tasks giving other people who refuse to a one-time solution that will last them a lifetime.

Might I suggest trying the simple exercise of placing objects of different shapes and sizes into the correctly shaped holes they fit into? I think you might find it very entertaining. If you get stuck, as I'm sure you will, here's a hint:

Thank you Oz for posting this informative and helpful guide. Said guide was part of the decision to use portable opera instead of portable chrome. I encourage you to keep making guides in a similar vein!

Yea because that REALLY is gonna make life MUCH easier, those starving kids in africa can breath a sigh of relief now that you ONLY have to left click the Warcraft 3 file, instead of right clicking bringing up a menu then left clicking 'save target as'.

Just seems kinda pointless really IE, Firefox etc pretty much just gives you the choice to download files it doesn't recognise anyway and the work around isn't that big of a deal. Sure if you had to highlight the link, go into settings, then into genral, click on the advanced tab then scroll down three pages to find save target as, it would probably make a difference.

Point is that it's not very user friendly and your average person wouldn't even know how to find the type of a file let alone setting up a browser to download those file types.

But she couldn't remember 1 line of simple instructions?

What you have failed to grasp is that by implementing this feature in Opera (that Oz has kindly shown us) on you mums PC, she doesn't need to learn or do anything;
you do it once for people and they never have a problem again, it just works for them, and that is the most user-friendly you can get.

I feel it's important to acknowledge how great oz's post was. Countless time will be saved downing customs! I would be pleased to see more helpful, informative posts like this on the forums!

I'm glad that you agree with me. It's also nice to know that I've been helping the starving children in Africa as well.

The purpose of my original post, though exceedingly obvious, seems to have escaped you. Then provided with my second post, to highlight the obvious purpose of my first, you still can't seem to understand.
This is indeed a puzzling contradiction. The only real way to explain this is that some external factor such as mental retardation has adversely influenced your intellect such that it is well behind that of your more capable parents, who now appear to be smart, ignorant, luddites, or people that somehow know very well how to cheat in their tests.

How can anyone capable of thinking not understand that my original post, explaining a way to make Opera work in a more convenient way, was directed at users of the web browser Opera. With this in mind, the way that Firefox or IE work is therefore irrelevant. Firefox doesn't even have a Preferences option under the Tools menu, making my post absolutely meaningless to anyone who uses Firefox.
I'm so glad that you can at least understand that these things aren't user friendly and that this average person wouldn't know what to do. It's absolutely stunning, then, that you couldn't connect the dots and figure out that I am remedying this situation by showing them what to do.
The purpose of my post was to provide a solution rather than a workaround. I thought I explained this well in my second post, but this notion has somehow escaped x3pwnage, who's exceptional grammar has charmed us all into believing he is a far superior thinker. Perhaps even more than my pet dog (who routinely hits her head on doors expecting them to open), or the dust inside my PC case.
My thanks for your feedback, and for pointing out that you seem to think my point was pointless.
And by the way, did you ever get those blocks into the correct slots, or are you still trying?

Apparantly this is irrelevant

As said by you.

And I fully understand what you are trying show us here but I was saying the feature was pointless, not your post. 90% of people that use opera wouldn't even know its there and all it does is fix a very minor inconvenience for most people (uness you have a mac, then there is no right click :o ).

As for the puzzle...
