NZ's Internet Filter Goes Live.
The Department of Internal Affairs' (DIA) internet filter is now operational and is being used by internet providers (ISPs) Maxnet and Watchdog.
Beagle says the DIA refuses to say which other ISPs will be joining the filter, claiming the right to negotiate in secret.
However, Tech Liberty understands that Telstra Clear, Telecom and Vodafone have said they will implement the filter, with Orcon, Slingshot and Natcom saying that they won't.
O'Brien says there is no compulsion for ISPs to tell their customers their internet service is being filtered.
"It's a voluntary system and there's no legislation," he says, adding he understands the ISPs currently on the system have informed their customers.

Hmm I wonder what kind of sites they are going to block...

I hope they arent running this using the method that I saw in the proposed plan

Basicly all internet traffic is sent to the DIA servers before being passed through to ISPs and then us.

Imagine what happens if the DIA servers go down... then all out internets are owned

People are starting to dislike Telecom for all the wrong reasons these days.
What happened to the good old days when people who were actually intelligent and informed complained about the lack of competition, the failure to implement better existing and emerging technologies and build infrastructure, and the CEO that dressed like a classy hooker?
I'm so tired of all these simple, one-liner XT jokes. To be honest, I never really expect it to succeed to begin with, so I dunno why everyone's so fed up with it.

Sorry for the double-post. I meant to add something relevant to the topic. If an admin wants to merge them or -1 to my post count, please do.

I read the article you linked in the original post, and I really don't see the point of implementing something like this.
I mean, I'm all for catching those who deal with CP, but I've never seen anything close to that when I'm browsing the internet, so I'd imagine you would actually need to intentionally look for it specifically to be able to find it. Even sites like Google have pretty reliable image search filtering, and often show warnings about sites that might be dangerous when you use the web search.
There's simply no way I can think of to justify it.

My apologies, I haven't actaully seen any one-line XT jokes around, that one just came off the top of my head when I was thinking of a comment to illustrate my thoughts that if someone was setting up some network infrastructure that would serve all of NZ it would surely be at least 3 9's reliable, then I thought of Telecom and XT...

Maybe the purpose of this is to remove the 'I accidently went there' argument, the filter will probably be easy to get around but it means that you intentionally went about going around the filter.

Of course the sites that end up being blocked will be warez sites...

Funny if all the pr0n was blocked too. Men everywhere in New Zealand would be in uproar.

First of all, you don't really need to apologize just because I got tired of a joke. I appreciate the gesture, though.

To be honest, I really don't think that's the case. There are a lot of sites where users post links to illegal files and an account is required. It might be difficult to claim that these sites host illegal content if nobody can create an account, and it would be unreasonable to restrict access to only some pages that have the illegal posts on these sites (restricting topic conversations would be inappropriate).
It might be difficult but you wouldn't even need to use a proxy to work around something like this. There are a lot of sites that document pirated releases that aren't technically illegal in any way, and then there are content hosts that can store both legitimate and illegal files based on what users of those sites upload. Then, dare I say it, there's things like... Google Cache... for finding those link to those illegal files.

And this doesn't exactly prevent noobs from using Limewire or bittorrent.
